Babalu was re-homed eight times in the first 11 years of his life. Being re-homed is difficult for any cockatoo but being re-homed that many times shatters their worldview. It was difficult to work with him in the beginning because he was afraid that you would leave him. This often meant that he would bite or scream. But in a relatively short period of time we taught him to trust us and now he rarely bites or screams.
Unfortunately, he now has a medical condition that requires urgent diagnosis and care. Birds should have a clean tail but Bab is having trouble passing solids. His Cloaca, the area of the tail where feces comes out, swells up to five times its normal size when he tries to pass feces. There are many issues that could cause this and diagnosis is critical. This kind of condition is life-threatening. So far we have this under control with diet and veterinary care.
